On Duty
All SPSO positions are based in the Lansing area. SPSO's perform a number of law enforcement functions while on duty including patrol of the Capitol Grounds and state office buildings, security at special events, dignitary protection, and the investigation of criminal complaints which emanate from state agencies or occur on state owned or leased property. Patrols are deployed on foot, bicycle or in a patrol car. SPSO's work under the direction of a Lieutenant and Detective Sergeant providing 24 hour 365 day a year coverage within their patrol area. SPSO's must exercise good judgment while responding effectively to critical situations which occur in an extremely high profile environment.
Minimum Requirements
- Applicant must be 21 years of age by recruit school graduation.
- Applicant must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. A college education is not required, though it is recommended.
- Applicant must be a Michigan resident and have a valid Michigan driver's license prior to recruit school graduation.
- Applicant cannot have a felony conviction or be a suspect in a case with the reasonable belief the applicant committed a felony.
- Applicant must meet the Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards minimum hearing requirements and visual acuity standards.
- An assessment of eight or more points
- Three or more moving violations
- Two or more traffic crashes resulting in moving violations or civil infractions In the four years prior to the beginning of the selection process for a recruit school, applicants cannot have:
- A conviction of driving with a suspended or revoked license
- A conviction of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including impaired driving
- Two or more convictions of reckless driving

Salary and Benefits
Recruits are employees of the MSP on the first day of recruit school and do not pay for their training. Recruits also receive full insurance and other benefits while attending recruit school.

After Graduation
All recruits are assigned to the Capitol Security Section. Recruits participate in an 8 week Field Training Officer (FTO) Program under the direction of a senior officer. After successful completion of the FTO program new officers are assigned to various shifts and patrols in the Lansing area.
